Kyoto is known as the birthplace of Japanese culture, and was once home to several of Japan's former capitals, including Kuni-kyo(恭仁京), Nagaoka-kyo(長岡京), and Heian-kyo(平安京). Despite having suffered significant damage during wartime, it still retains many historic cultural landmarks. As a result, it has become a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from both within Japan and abroad.
