11月6日、今日はお昼過ぎに西本願寺へ、季節の花を見に行ってきました。西本願寺では、10月13日から11月23日までの期間、朝5時半から夕方17時まで「本願寺献菊展（ほんがんじけんぎくてん）」が開催されています。

本願寺献菊展は西本願寺の秋の恒例行事で、今年で72回を数えます。本堂前庭には約200鉢もの菊が献花され、秋の彩りに包まれていました。ということで今回は、散歩がてらその菊を見に行ってきたというわけです。

菊の栽培方法にはさまざまな種類があり、なかでも印象的だったのが福助作り。大菊を5号鉢で栽培し、コンパクトながらも大作りに負けない大輪の花を咲かせます。頭でっかちの姿が福助人形を思わせることから、この名がついたそうです。また、全体を丸く仕立てて背丈を60cm以下に抑えるだるま作りなども展示されており、見入ってしまいました。そのほかにも、ヨーロッパで品種改良されたドーム菊や、糸のように細い花弁が特徴的な嵯峨菊など、個性豊かな品種が並んでいました。

菊についてあまり知識のなかった私ですが、展示には丁寧な説明書きが添えられており、ゆっくり見て回るうちにすっかり楽しんでしまいました。京都ではさまざまな場所で献菊展が行われていますので、今秋はいろいろな会場を巡ってみようかなと思った次第です。


The 72nd Nishi Hongan-ji Chrysanthemum Exhibition — 200 Pots of Autumn Beauty and Traditional Craftsmanship

On November 6, I visited Nishi Hongan-ji Temple around midday to see the seasonal flowers. From October 13 to November 23, the temple is hosting its annual Hongan-ji Chrysanthemum Exhibition (Hongan-ji Kengikuten), open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This exhibition is one of Nishi Hongan-ji’s cherished autumn traditions, now in its 72nd year. About 200 pots of chrysanthemums were beautifully arranged in front of the main hall, filling the temple grounds with the vibrant colors of fall. It was the perfect excuse for an afternoon stroll.

There are many styles of chrysanthemum cultivation, but one that caught my eye was the Fukusuke style. In this method, a large chrysanthemum is grown in a small five-inch pot, creating a compact yet impressive bloom that rivals the grandeur of full-sized varieties. The name “Fukusuke” comes from its resemblance to the round-headed Fukusuke figurines, symbols of good fortune. Another fascinating style on display was the Daruma form, where the plant is trained into a rounded shape and kept under 60 cm in height. I found myself admiring the meticulous care behind each display.

The exhibition also featured a wide range of unique varieties—from European-bred dome-shaped chrysanthemums to the delicate Saga-giku, known for its fine, thread-like petals. Even without much prior knowledge about chrysanthemums, I thoroughly enjoyed walking through the displays, thanks to the detailed explanations that accompanied each exhibit.

Kyoto hosts several chrysanthemum exhibitions throughout the autumn season, and after this visit, I’m tempted to explore a few more venues to experience how each one celebrates this elegant flower in its own way.
