11月20日、今日はお昼過ぎから円山公園に紅葉を見に行き、その帰りに知恩院へ立ち寄りました。というのも、知恩院では11月18日から21日まで、セコム株式会社のセキュリティロボット「cocobo（ココボ）」の実証実験が行われているんですね。このcocoboが境内を巡回している様子を見てみたくて、今回は円山公園の紅葉と合わせて足を運んでみたというわけです。

このcocobo、実はあの関西万博でも使用されていたそうで、4台あるうちの1台が今回知恩院での実証実験をしているそうです。AIと5Gを活用してカメラに映った人や障害物を避けながら自律走行できるほか、日本語や英語などでアナウンスも可能。今日は知恩院の参拝時間などを流しながら境内を巡回していました。

近くで見ると、思っていた以上にスピードがあって驚きました。後で聞いた話ですが、時速4キロとのこと。人の歩くスピードより少し早いくらいでしょうか。観光客の近くに来ると自動で停止し、安全が確認されるとまたスッと動き出す。私が見ている限り、トラブルもなくスムーズに巡回していましたね。

それから、このcocobo、意外と可愛らしいんですよね。見た目も動きもどこか愛嬌があって、観光客にも大人気。私のようにスマホで撮影する人がたくさんいて、ちょっとしたマスコットのような存在感でした。

A Security Robot at Chion-in!? I Went to See “cocobo” in Action

On November 20th, I went to Maruyama Park in the early afternoon to enjoy the autumn leaves, and on my way back I stopped by Chion-in. From November 18th to 21st, Chion-in has been conducting a field test of SECOM’s security robot “cocobo,” and I wanted to see it patrol the temple grounds for myself. So this time, I combined my autumn-leaf outing with a visit to check out cocobo.

Apparently, cocobo was used at the Kansai Expo as well, and one of the four units is currently being tested at Chion-in. Equipped with AI and 5G technology, it can autonomously navigate while avoiding people and obstacles captured by its cameras, and it can also make announcements in Japanese and English. Today, it was patrolling the precincts while broadcasting information such as the temple’s visiting hours.

Seeing it up close, I was surprised by how fast it moved. I later learned it travels at about 4 km/h—slightly faster than an average walking speed. When it approaches visitors, it automatically stops, and once it confirms the area is safe, it smoothly starts moving again. From what I observed, it navigated around without any issues.

And surprisingly, cocobo is quite cute. Its appearance and movements have a certain charm, making it popular with visitors. Many people, myself included, were taking photos with their smartphones, and it almost felt like a mascot wandering around the temple.
