11月18日。今日は朝からどんよりとした曇り空で、午後からは雨が降るかもしれないという予報でした。そのため遠出はやめて、どこか近場で行ける場所はないかなと考えていたところ、昨日テレビで紹介されていた堀川の銀杏を思い出し、見に行くことにしました。堀川紫明から堀川上立売あたりまで、ずっと銀杏並木が続いているんですね。

まずは地下鉄で鞍馬口まで行き、途中の「花の木」さんで朝ごはん代わりにカレーライスとコーヒーをいただきました。余談ですが、この花の木さんは俳優・高倉健さんが生前よく訪れていた喫茶店として知られています。店内は昭和の名残を感じさせるレトロな雰囲気で、常連さんがゆったり過ごしている落ち着いたお店です。

腹ごしらえもできたところで、いよいよ銀杏を見に堀川通へ。花の木さんから歩いて10分もかからない距離です。到着すると、テレビで見たとおりの鮮やかな黄色い銀杏が並び、通り全体が秋色に染まっていました。遊歩道にはぎんなんが無数に落ちていて、独特の香りがふんわり漂っています。しばらく銀杏並木を歩きながら、晩秋の空気をゆっくり楽しみました。

ただ、少し残念だったのは天気ですね。厚い雲が空を覆っていて、せっかくの銀杏も写真に撮ると少し映えない感じに。まあ、天気が悪いのは分かった上で来たので仕方ないのですが…。晴れた日にもう一度見に来ようかと思ったものの、明日もどうやら曇り予報。悩ましいところです。


A Walk Along the Gingko Trees on Horikawa, Under a Cloudy Sky

November 18th. The sky was gloomy from the morning, and the forecast said it might start raining in the afternoon. So instead of going far, I wondered if there was somewhere nearby I could visit. Then I remembered the gingko trees along Horikawa that I had seen on TV yesterday, and decided to go check them out. The gingko-lined street stretches all the way from Horikawa–Shimei down to Horikawa–Kamidachiuri.

I first took the subway to Kuramaguchi and stopped by Hananoki for an early lunch—curry rice and coffee. As a small side note, Hananoki is known as a café frequently visited by the actor Ken Takakura when he was alive. The interior still has a charming retro feel that reminds you of the Showa era, and regular customers sit quietly enjoying their time.

With my stomach satisfied, I headed to Horikawa Street to see the gingko trees. It’s less than a ten-minute walk from Hananoki. When I arrived, the view was just like what I’d seen on TV—rows of bright yellow gingko leaves, turning the entire street into a scene of deep autumn. The walkway was covered with fallen ginnan nuts, giving off their distinctive scent as I strolled along.

If anything, the only disappointing part was the weather. Thick clouds covered the sky, and although the gingko leaves were beautiful, they didn’t look quite as vibrant in photos. Well, I knew the weather wouldn’t be great when I came out, so I can’t complain too much…but it did make me want to come back again on a sunny day. Unfortunately, tomorrow’s forecast is cloudy again. Quite the dilemma.
