11月15日、今日は朝から京都植物園に行ってきました。お目当ては、少し前にテレビで紹介されていた“グリーンバードフラワー”と呼ばれるクロタラリア・カニンガミーです。オーストラリアの熱帯〜砂漠地域に分布する植物で、その名のとおりハチドリそっくりの花を咲かせるのが特徴なんです。

朝早めに行ったのですが、すでに多くの方が来園されていて、クロタラリア・カニンガミーの前には小さな列ができていました。やはりテレビの影響は大きいようで、皆さんカメラやスマホを向けてじっくり観察されていました。

実際に目の前で見ると、本当に鳥のように見えて、とても不思議な感覚になります。ぱっと見は「AIで作った画像かな？」と思われそうですが、ちゃんとした本物の植物です。

見頃は11月中旬までと言われていますが、花の状態を見た感じでは月末頃までは楽しめそうな気がします。気になる方は、ぜひ早めに足を運んでみてくださいね。


A Bird in Bloom? Visiting the Green Bird Flower at the Kyoto Botanical Gardens

On November 15, I headed to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens first thing in the morning. My goal was to see the Green Bird Flower—Crotalaria cunninghamii—which had recently been featured on TV. Native to tropical and desert regions of Australia, this plant is known for its blossoms that look strikingly like tiny hummingbirds.

I arrived fairly early, but the garden was already quite crowded. A small line had formed in front of the Crotalaria cunninghamii, and thanks to its TV appearance, many visitors were taking their time photographing and observing the unique flower.

Seeing it up close, it truly does look like a real bird—it’s almost uncanny. At a glance, you might even think it’s an AI-generated image, but of course, it’s a genuine plant.

While the peak viewing period is said to be mid-November, judging from the state of the flowers, it seems like they might last until the end of the month. If you’re curious, I definitely recommend visiting sooner rather than later.
